What is tested on a MOT?
For all MOTs we test the following by law to make sure that your car is road legal:
Lamps, electrical equipment and reflectors
Brake, fog, indicator, registration plate lights and reflectors as well as front and rear lights must:
• Be correctly positioned and secure
• Be in a good condition
• Show the correct colour
• Not be obscured
• Not be adversely affected by the operation of any other light
• Headlight aim (both dip beam and main beam) should be below the horizontal, so as not to dazzle other drivers
• Illuminate with a single operation of the switch
• Pairs of lights must emit light of the same colour, size and shape
Seat belts and restraint systems
We will test each seat belt for its security and condition. This includes any attachments or adjustment fittings also.
Mirrors
Your wind mirrors and wing mirrors must be securely attached to your vehicle and give adequate views to the side and to the rear.
Windscreen
Wipers and washers must clean and sweep a wide enough area to give the driver a satisfactory view of the road. The windscreen in front of the driver must also be clear of any obstructions or damage.
Exhaust
The exhaust is checked to makes sure there is no sign of leaks. If your vehicle was originally fitted with a catalytic convertor then this must also still be present.
Emissions
We test the smoke emitted from the exhaust are not exceeding the legal limit of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.
Fuel System
The fuel system of your vehicle will be checked to make sure there is no leaks and that the tank cap seals properly.
Body
We will complete a general inspection of the body work of your vehicle to include the body, chassis, engine mountings, seats and doors. All of these items should not have excessive corrosion or have sharp edges that could cause injury.
Registration Plates
You must have a registration plate on both the front and the rear of the vehicle. They must be secured properly and be visible from someone standing 20 metres away from the vehicle.
Vehicle identification Number or VIN
Your vehicle must display a legal VIN number on a permanent basis. This will be via a VIN plate secured to the vehicle or etched / stamped on the body or chassis.
Tyres & Road Wheels
Your tyres must be an appropriate speed and loads rating for your vehicle and your tread depth must not be below the legal limit of 1.6mm. All tyres will be examined for cuts, splits and tears in excess of 25mm. If your vehicle has run flat tyres then the warning light must also operate correctly. All road wheels must be in a good general condition.
Brakes
We will check the overall condition of the brakes as well as the pedals, levers and warning lights. This will be followed by a brake efficiency test.
Steering
We will check the condition and strength of your steering wheel to make sure there are no issues with the steering components. We will also test your steering locking device to ensure it only locks when the engine isn’t running.
Suspension
Shock absorbers and suspension components will be checked for excessive corrosion, fractures or distortion.
Horn & Battery
Your horn must produce a continuous uniform note and must be loud enough to be heard by other road users and the battery in your vehicle must be secured and not show any signs of leaking electrolyte
Electrical Wiring
All wiring should be secure and must not be damaged to the point where it could become detached or short circuit.
